We are less than a month away from developer GSC Game World, the creators of S.T.A.L.K.E.R., releasing their real-time strategy title Cossacks 3. The buildup for the game has been pretty quiet, even for an RTS.
Cossacks 3 is a remake of the original 2001 Cossacks title, and it brings with it the original feel and mechanics—all with a new coat of paint. It brings traditional real-time strategy elements such as construction and resource management, along with the ability to lead massive armies into battle.
Cossacks 3 is set in 17th-18th century Europe, as was the original 2001 title. What sets this game apart from the 2001 classic is the new 3D engine that promises truly impressive visuals. With up to 10,000 units on the map, battles are sure to be massive and beautiful. GSC has also promised realistic bullet and cannon physics, with the geography of the land playing a big role in battles.
The game will launch with 12 playable nations across five single player campaigns and a multiplayer function that supports up to seven other players. Players can battle against one another or choose to team up and topple computer opponents. GSC also has plans to expand the number of factions to a grand-total of 20 after release, as detailed in the game’s FAQ.
Naval engagements have also been promised, giving the player more options when fighting. This will allow for the player to coordinate both land and naval units for a combined assault, increasing the odds of a favorable outcome—while also giving opposing players something to contemplate should they choose to create a town near the water.
As previously mentioned, GSC Game World have put a premium on emphasizing the importance of elevation when engaging in battles. This allows defenders to have a distinct advantage in situations where they must defend a hill from an opponent attempting to make their way up.
The PC specifications for Cossacks 3 have not yet been released, but GSC has said that the game will not take very beefy computers to run. Cossacks 3 is slated for release on September 20 on Steam.
